Mission statement: As citizens living and working in Albemarle County we are dedicated to promoting the sustainability of our environment while protecting private property rights and our nation's Constitutional freedoms.
In contrast to the vision promoted by the United Nations' Agenda 21, we propose an alternative vision based on our heritage as Virginians and Americans. Our founding principles are contained in The 2011 Sustainability Accords.
Thus, to achieve sustainability in our County, the goals of SustainAlbemarle are the following:
To foster a dynamic and diverse economy where individuals can freely pursue their education, talents and working life; and build a better life through individual initiative.
To support and respect the choices that individuals make with respect to their livelihood, their occupational and physical mobility, and their residence.
To acknowledge that landowners are the best stewards of their land.
To encourage small farms to flourish by minimizing regulations on the sale of locally produced farm products.
To acknowledge that local modes of transportation reflect individual choices and natural efficiencies.
To promote policies that empower parents, recognizing that parents are the most reliable moral guardians of their children and the best decision-makers for their upbringing, safety, education and general well being.
To acknowledge that the values and ethics in our community are a function of both cultural diversities and free associations, both of which arise spontaneously in a healthy society.
To support the cornerstones of an ordered society: local, participatory democracy, private property rights, and rule of law.
To foster low property taxes to ensure that living in our region remains affordable to all groups regardless of age or income.
To approach climate issues without political bias, welcoming a wide range of views and research data from climate scientists, and insisting upon an honest and open peer review process, and reasonable scientific proof as a precondition to consideration of any "greenhouse gas" or carbon regulations and ordinances.
